Toys R Us, one of the world’s largest toy store chains, was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1948, and currently has over 1800 stores – 800 in the United States, and over 1,000 in other countries. Toys R Us is known for their mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, who made his debut in 1957 and has appeared in countless television commercial and print advertisements.
Toys R Us owns and operates the iconic FAO Schwartz toy store brand. The store also operated “Kids R Us,” a children’s clothing chain. Kids R Us first opened in 1983, but finally folded in 2003 after competition from other children’s stores was just too much.
