Kmart was formed by Mr. S. S. Kresge who was born on July 31, 1867 and passed away on October 18, 1966. Mr. Kresge opened the first Kmart location in Garden City, Michigan but did not get a chance to see the store really take off as he passed away only four years later. For years KMart was headquartered in Troy Michigan until the firm was purchased by Sears and then moved to Hoffman Estates.
