  • Residents will be notified by mail each time a surcharge is added to their account
  • Texas adds surcharges based on individual traffic offenses that have occurred after the date of Sept. 1, 2003

Texas’ Driver Responsibility program is a system that allows for surcharges to be added to an individual based on certain traffic offenses that have occurred on or after September 1, 2003. Texas surcharges are calculated in two ways: a points based system and a conviction based system. Each time a surcharge is added to their account, drivers receive a notification in the mail.

To make a payment towards a Texas driver surcharge account, drivers will need their current Texas drivers license number (or I.D. card number), the reference number from the surcharge notice received in the mail, and a valid credit/ debit card or valid checking, savings, or money market account.

With the Texas DPS Driver Responsibility Surcharge Online Services site, customers can make a payment towards their current surcharges, apply for the Indigency / Incentive program, and more. The surcharges assessed as a part of this program are assessed in addition to any reinstatement fees required for other administrative actions.

Payments made through this system will take anywhere between 24 to 48 hours to process fully, and then 3 to 5 days to be credited to the driver’s account. Active duty military can request a military deployment deferral for their Texas surcharge accounts. Texas driver surcharges are fees that are added in addition to other related legal fees, and do not replace a drivers license suspension, a revocation or a license, or any denials, disqualifications or cancellations that result from a conviction.

Assuming the applicant is approved they will have to make their first loan payment in approximately 30-45 days after the funding of the loan has been processed.  The minimum amount of a loan under the SOFI View My Rate 1 terms is listed as $10,000 and the maximum loan amount is up to the Cost of Attendance.  Once the child graduates college the loan will still be in the parents name and the loan CANNOT be transferred under any circumstances.
