It’s 2015, and Apple still is selling iOS devices with a measly 16GB of storage space. It’s a popular model, though, with budget conscious consumers often choosing the low capacity device to save money at the time of purchase. It’s a choice they may come to regret. With high quality photos, music files, and video recordings, a phone with this low storage space can fill up quickly. It’s not surprising then that iOS owners find themselves scouring the Internet for tips to free up storage space on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

One quick and easy tip that could open up gigabytes of space is hidden within the Photos app. Think your photos are removed from your device when you deleted them during your last organization effort? Think again. Unbeknownst to many people, Apple continues to store your photos even after you have marked them for deletion. Depending on how many photos you take, this cache of photos could be occupying hundreds of megabytes and maybe even gigabytes of space. Thankfully, Apple makes its easy to permanently delete these deleted photos once you know where to find them.

Follow these steps to remove any deleted photos still being stored on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

• Open the Photos app.
• Tab the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen.
• Scroll, if necessary, until you see the folder titled “Recently Deleted.”
• Tap to open the “Recently Deleted” album, which is where all deleted photos are stored.
• Tap “Select” in the upper right corner.
• Tap on “Delete All” in the bottom left to remove all the photos in this album
• Alternatively, you can select individual photos for permanent removal and then tap “Delete.”

Please note that iOS 8 will keep these deleted photos only for 30 days. After 30 days, the photos will be purged automatically in order to prevent this folder from growing too large and taking up too much space. 30 days, though, can be a long time, especially if you take a lot of pictures and clean out your photos on a regular basis.You may want to get in the habit of cleaning out this”Recently Deleted” album on a regular basis.
